SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF DAIRY FARMING: INVESTMENT ASPECT AND ROLE IN ENSURING FOOD INDEPENDENCE OF UKRAINE
Abstract
The relevance of the study is determined by the increasing need to ensure Ukraine’s food independence under conditions of economic instability and the growing demand for sustainable development of agriculture. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the theoretical and methodological foundations and to identify the features of investment provision for the sustainable development of dairy cattle farming in the context of ESG transformation. The economic essence and principles of sustainable development in the agricultural sector were examined, which highlight the necessity of balancing economic efficiency, environmental responsibility, and social inclusiveness in dairy production systems. The specific characteristics of dairy cattle farming as a strategic branch of agribusiness were established, characterized by a continuous production cycle, high capital intensity, and significant socio-economic importance for rural areas. The role of investment as a key driver of modernization, technological renewal, and increased competitiveness of the sector, as well as a factor ensuring long-term stability of production processes, was emphasized. Sources, forms, and instruments of investment in dairy farming were analyzed, and the main factors affecting investment attractiveness, including market, financial, and institutional risks, were identified. The importance of state financial support mechanisms and investment incentives in stimulating sustainable transformations in the sector was substantiated. Particular attention was given to the integration of ESG criteria, where environmental aspects such as resource efficiency, decarbonization, and waste management are combined with social priorities, including employment, rural development, food security, and effective corporate governance practices. Thus, the sustainable development of dairy cattle farming based on investment and ESG-oriented approaches is a strategic prerequisite for strengthening food independence, enhancing the resilience of the agri-food system, and ensuring long-term socio-economic stability in Ukraine.
